How to Have a Low-Fat Valentine's Day (Yes, it Can be Done!)

List: Posted: 02/10/11

When you think of Valentine’s Day, there are a few things that most likely come to mind: cards, flowers, and candy. Healthy snacks are just not part of the equation! While cards pluck at the heart strings and flowers can light up an entire room, there’s just something about those candy hearts and heart-shaped chocolates that makes them hard to stay away from, particularly if you've just been given a big box and you know they're there, sitting in the refrigerator!

Unfortunately, these treats can cause your waistline to expand, but just because you’re being healthy by skipping on the candy and chocolate, doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy a few tasty treats.

The first thing you need to do is put down that box of chocs and grab some fruit. Fruits like strawberries, kiwi, and orange slices pack a delicious taste but they’re also healthy, and at this time of year you can get them super cheap from your local produce store. If you just can’t say no to the chocolate craving, dip your strawberry in low-fat chocolate syrup.

We’re not done yet! Nothing says healthy like Jello. Even non sugar-free Jello is better for you than a box of chocolate. Best of all, Jello can be formed into shapes like hearts and flowers.  Make some jello hearts as dessert and we'll bet that nobody in your family notices they're eating a healthy desert.

By the end of Valentine’s Day, whether you have been showered with gifts from your sweetheart, or you’ve been pigging out with your co-workers, many people are on sugar-overload. Eat healthy this year when you purchase sugar-free muffin mix from your local grocery store.  This year, choose to make Valentine’s Day yummy and nutritious, rather than overindulging.
