The summer cookout season is upon us! When you’re ready to fire up the barbeque grill, which type will you be using – charcoal or propane?
These two wonderful variations of the grill both operate on a different level. Charcoal will burn down before it spreads and starts grilling, but propane allows for a hot and clean flame and utilizes a compressed propane fuel.
If you’re worried about cleanliness when you’re ready to clean up your grill, propane is certainly the way to go. Charcoal can be very messy and it creates dust. It also loses the ability to ignite over a certain amount of time. You’ll also get more smoke with charcoal and you’ll work harder when it’s time to clean up. Both grills utilize metal grates as your cooking surface, and they require their own type of cleaning.
Safety is another important consideration when you’re ready to cook. Charcoal requires closer contact, but propane can be very dangerous. A leak can cause asphyxiation in a confined space, or a fire. The tank must always be rust-free and have the right valve.
Taste is the most important issue at hand. The answer in the propane vs. charcoal debate will all depend on what type of taste you are looking for. When you utilize charcoal, you will get a very distinct smoky flavor. Charcoal also lets you do more slow cooking since you’re burning at a lower temperature. Propane grills, however, offer speed and good taste. It’s really just a matter of opinion in the taste category.
